The Ultimate Guide to Carnival Horizon

To us, it always seemed a bit dated — similar to themed hotels in Las Vegas. Restaurant and cabin crew members were terrifically friendly and efficient, while bar service ranged from slow to apathetic. We had long wait times poolside for service, and visited bars listed in the daily schedule as "open" only to find they were closed. Find out which fun ingredients — staterooms, dining, activities — go into each deck. The Carnival cruise ship also has the most expansive shopping experience in the fleet with dedicated stores including the Victoria Secret store, watches, and more.

Balcony (HL)

Located at the front of the ship, it features dozens of sitting areas, including a number of half-domed private loungers large enough for two people. At the back of the ship is the Tides pool, featuring two whirlpools and a center pool. We found this to be our favorite spot to hang out on the ship.

Where does Carnival Horizon sail from?

The cost is $5 (even though the pizza is free), but that’s a small price to pay if you don’t feel like traversing the entire ship to get a pie. A Cloud 9 Spa Suite is the ultimate in both stateroom and spa accommodations. There's room for you and your things - with a large room and balcony - and a walk-in closet. The soothing in-room whirlpool tub will help you stay relaxed after your relaxing spa treatment.

Fitness on Carnival Horizon

Deck 5 is Carnival Horizon's promenade deck, and you'll find lots of chairs and loungers here, too. The seating spaces form an outdoor extension of bars or restaurants, so you're never far from cocktails. During the day, passengers chill out, reading and having quiet conversation.

Daily Things to Do on Carnival Horizon

And while you sail along, the whole family will enjoy not only exclusive access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, but more great perks around the ship. Family life is the sweet life, whether on land or at sea… and especially when in a Family Harbor Suite. Your whole crew will enjoy not only the stretch-out space, huge balcony and other perks a suite offers, but a nautical décor specially-designed for Family Harbor staterooms. And while you sail along, the kids and the adults can make use of exclusive access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, plus other exclusive perks around the ship.

SkyBox Sports Bar gets you right onto the 50-yard line of onboard sports action. And if you’re feeling lucky, feel free to grab a controller and get a little competitive with the latest sports game titles. They’re free to play, so find a friend or three and get set for some serious play-action. It’s where young teens ages 12 to 14 go to hang out, meet new friends, and enjoy some pretty awesome activities like dance parties, games, outdoor movies and more, in the special Circle “C” area or around the ship. It’s all supervised by friendly and fun-loving counselors who want your young teens to have the best vacation ever. A picture window gives you views of scenery you won’t find anywhere on land, all from the comfort of your stateroom.

There are only four Havana Cabana rooms on Carnival Horizon. The Havana Cabana suites sleep up to four guests and are all decorated in a fun, Cuban style. Balcony cabins have about the same interior space but also include 35 square feet of balcony space, providing about 20% more room. If you plan to stay in an interior cabin, we’d suggest no more than two adults.

Then there’s a lot you should know to make the most of your vacation starting the day you step on the ship. Carnival Horizon is a Vista-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. She is the 26th vessel in the Carnival fleet and is the second of Carnival's Vista class, which includes Carnival Vista and Carnival Panorama.

In the lounge are sitting and play areas, board games, video games, computers, large screen TVs and a breakfast buffet that also has snacks during the day. Put simply, whether you like spaces that are fun and colorful or like your hangouts to be more secluded and chilled out, you’re going to be able to find a comfortable spot to enjoy. In the middle of the ship as you board is the three-story atrium, featuring a large “plume” with video graphics playing constantly. While the center rotunda is somewhat small (especially compared to large promenades on Royal Caribbean ships), it’s definitely eye-catching. Vacation purist looking to get away from all the news feeds and trending whatevers? We dig your style — a Carnival cruise remains the disconnectedest kind of vacation. Lots of fun amenities and activities such as a sports court, a ropes course, mini-golf and a kids club with a variety of age-specific activities, as well as teens and tweens, make this the perfect family cruise ship. Enjoy indoor and al fresco dining, fun bars, thrilling entertainment and more.

Ours features your choice of steak cuts, lobster, lamb and more… and inside, there’s even a full bar that pours great pairings. These are the building blocks of an amazing experience — delectable elements that combine with great service to offer an evening to remember. BlueIguana Cantina is Carnival Horizon’s onboard taco-and-burrito place, featuring freshly-made Mexican faves. Because BlueIguana is all about you, we’ll make it with the ingredients you choose — tell us which meat, veggies, rice and beans you’re in the mood for — and then we’ll hand it over to you for the finishing touches. Any way you dress it, expect a meal that’s suited up to satisfy. This is an affordable way to cruise without leaving out the comfort or convenience!

(Horizon is the only ship in Carnival's fleet to feature the Seuss-themed water park.) The Cat in the Hat slide -- it's more than 450 feet long -- sends riders down a twisty, turny trip while riding a tube. The entrance to the slide resembles the cat's famous red and white hat, a pattern that is repeated on the slide itself; some sections are translucent, others opaque. The second slide is the Fun Things slide, named after Thing 1 and Thing 2. The shorter of the slides, it is fully enclosed and features polka dots and lighting effects.

The new shows (named "Celestial Strings", "Soulbound", "Vintage Pop") use the full capacity of the interactive LED screens. A 4th show ("Amor Cubano - A Caribbean Dance Romance") is also available on the Horizon ship.

Premium RestaurantsLike many other cruise lines, Carnival seems to be shifting toward offering more premium or “specialty” restaurants. If you’re sick of eating the buffet and burgers, these can be a welcome change of pace. During our cruise we didn’t have time to eat at any of these spots but their menus all looked delicious. In addition to the pools, there are also the Dr. Suess WaterWorks.

You'll find faux palm trees and bright yellow umbrellas, along with some of the best views from the ship. It's away from the action of the Beach Pool area, so it really is quiet and far less busy. The main pool on Carnival Horizon is the Beach Pool, located on the Lido Deck, Deck 10, midship. It's fairly large and plenty deep, and on hot days, it's packed.

Earlier shows tend to be family friendly, but later shows are definitely for adults. (Look at your Fun Times cruise daily to make sure you're not taking the kids to an adult show.) The Limelight Lounge is a large space with lots of seating in deep red armchairs facing a stage. If you don't want to get stuck behind one, get to the show early.
